What is the difference between Digital Signature & Digital Signature Certificate?
A Digital Signature is an electronic form of a signature that can be used to authenticate the identity of the sender of a message or the signer of a document, and also ensure that the original content of the message or document that has been sent is unchanged. Digital signatures are easily transportable and cannot be imitated by someone else. The ability to ensure that the original signed message arrived means that the sender cannot easily disclaim it later.
Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) is the electronic format of physical or paper certificate like a driving License, passport etc. Certificates serve as proof of identity of an individual for a certain purpose; for example, a Passport identifies someone as a citizen of that country; who can legally travel to any country. Likewise, a Digital Signature Certificate can be presented electronically to prove your identity, to access information or services on the Internet or to sign certain documents digitally.

What are the classes in Digital Signature Certificate?
There are three classes of Digital Signature Certificate
- Class 1 – This class type is used to secure email communications and shall be issued for both business personnel and private individual use.
- Class 2 – This class type is used for Incorporation of entities, Business Registrations, Income Tax Filing, etc. These certificates will confirm that the information in the application provided by the subscriber does not conflict with the information in well-recognized consumer databases.
- Class 3 – This class type is used for participating in E-Tendering or E-Auctions. These are high assurance certificates, primarily intended for e-commerce applications, they shall be issued to individuals only on their personal (physical) appearance before the Certifying Authorities.
What is a Certifying Authority (CA)?
A Certifying Authority is a trusted agency whose central responsibility is to issue, revoke, renew and provide directories for Digital Signature Certificates. According to Section 24 of the Information Technology Act 2000, Certifying Authority means a person who has been granted a license to issue Digital Signature Certificates.
I have lost my Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) USB Key, What should i do ?
It is advisable to keep your Digital Signature Certificate USB private key in safe custody, but by any chance, if you lost your USB key you can you can revoke your certificate at the certifying authorities website by entering certain information like Registered Email ID, Certificate Serial Number, Date of Birth and Revocation Reason
I have forgot my login credentials of my Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)? Is it possible to reset it?
No. If you have forgotten your private key password, you will have to apply for a new Digital Signature Certificate
